I was an average plus
student in my engineering who used to do most of the nerdy stuff like attending
college and practical, submitting assignments on time etc. While I had a friend
who was a good exam scorer but he used to bunk classes and all…. There was an
internal marking system based on our attendance, performance, punctuality and
internal exam marks. After results, when I got good internal marks my friend
(who had less marks than me) said, you scored well because you are a ‘girl’.
And in seconds, all good I did in my semester vanished… just like that.
At my job place after
my education, I had a colleague who used to say that all ladies staff should go
home early because they have to ‘cook’ and do other household chores.
I am sure we all
always meet some gender biased people around us who thinks that certain set of
work should be done by women, or women get some benefits at our workplace
because of their gender. May be that’s true for some people but not for all. We
celebrate women’s day, we talk about women’s freedom and empowerment but is our
society really ready for empowered women?
Not only women but
everyone deserves respect, deserves to be well treated, deserves to have
opportunities, deserves to live their lives the way they want, deserves to cherish
their personality, their freedom, their hobbies, their ways of being happy…
everyone you know…. Women too…
People should accept
the fact that there are genuinely hard working, talented & not made for
just ‘cooking’ women in this world. They have proven it again and again and
they will continue to prove it. You can either support them or not. But just
remember when your mother or sister or daughter or wife or a friend gets promoted, maybe
it’s because of she worked really hard to achieve it.
Support them.
